PC1/11 Elective (Community services) part 3[Final]

30 November, 3-6 December 2012

After the AMSA-IMU (NKF) fundraising event,
I've decided to continue taking part in charity sales event as well =)
For this time, my choice was
Christmas charity sales event: A Gift to One is a Blessing to Another, at Subang Parade, organised by United Voice(Self-Advocacy Society of Persons with Learning Disabilities)
The volunteer partners with me for this time were Yin Yee, Hoon Mun, Su-Xian, Yee Yein, Joe Jen and some United Voice staffs at Subang Parade booth.
While for the coming weeks at Mid Valley booth, the volunteers will be Ming Kang, Jun Rong, Pei Wen, Chieh Hwa and Pei Xia.

United Voice(UV) is the first society led by people with learning disabilities that is recognised by Registrar of Societies in Malaysia.
The mission of UV is to advocate and to ensure that persons with learning disabilities are given the right to education, employment, community living and to be respected as individuals.

With United Voice staff (Izzudin, a learning disabilities person filled with hope, self confidence & a strong determination to live every single day meaningfully. He's involved in making the cards, craft & some cookies too =) Though, he might not be perfect in communication or lacking in terms of learning abilities, i'm impressed by the abilities & willingness of Izzudin on doing the handicraft and also volunteer himself on this charity event. Through him, I have learn that it doesn’t take much of how great you are or how popular you are to accomplish the task, it just takes your willingness and determination in doing & accomplish the task. I've learn that willpower is the key to success.
As the saying goes 'In the absence of willpower, the most complete collection of virtues and talents is wholly worthless.' )

PC1/11 Elective (Community services) part 2

27-28 November 2012,

After completing our volunteer services in SPCA and Zoo Negara, Ampang.
Most of us planned to involve ourselves as a volunteer in fundraising activities for National Kidney Foundation(NKF), Malaysia organised by Asian Medical Students' Association - International Medical University (AMSA-IMU)
Hoon Mun, Su-Xian and I were assigned to work together with IMU medicine students on 27 November 2012.
On 28 November 2012, XuJen, Chieh Hwa, Hoon Mun, Su-Xian and I were assigned to work together.
What is so special about this fundraising event is that every single cent spent will be entirely donated to NKF, which mean every single cent counts ! =)

National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is a charitable organisation where diaylsis is provided. NKF's patients are commonly from the lower income group. Generally, a dialysis treatments cost approximately RM 150- RM 250 at private medical centre. Hence, NKF helps through subsidising the cost of the dialysis treatments to those lower income groups patients that couldn't afford the dialysis treatment, the patients that subsidised by NKF are only required to pay a RM50 nominal fee for each dialysis treatment session.

PC1/11 Elective (Community services) part 1

6 Oct 2012

In the past few months, Joe Jen, Yee Yein, Ming Kang, XuJen & I have volunteered and visited a few places such as charity home visit with pharmacy and health science juniors(intake in 2012) at Thangam Illam Welfare Society, Pandan Indah.

29 July, 5, 8, 12-15 Nov 2012
After finishing our semester 3, EOS exam on the 1st week of November 2012.
We went again to Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (SPCA), Ampang on the 2nd week of November 2012 to help out the workers, gain understanding and appreciation toward people and animals as well. I've volunteered for 7 days in SPCA.

7, 9, 19-20, 23 Nov 2012
As a Zoo Negara Volunteer, my coursemates and I have experience the daily work routine of a Zoo Keeper at Zoo Negara, Ampang. The departments that I've worked before are Children's World, Ape Centre, Mammal Kingdom and Bear section (Guar Bulls).

Along this fascinating and mesmerizing journey,
I truly believe that my coursemates and I have learn a lot of precious and valuable lessons, and experience the things that we can't learn in the lecture rooms.
Through helping out in the community services,
I've learn that regardless of what work or practices you have been assigned, do it diligently and happily and these will make your life easier. Along the journey, we do encountered some good times and difficulty with people but these will only help us to grow and to be more mature if we can handle ourselves and our emotions, which i personally think is an important intrinsic value as a future health science profession.
Furthermore, it is wise to make it a point to get along with everyone or as much as possible & be forgiving.

It is true that sometimes you can learn something from a book, but do not forget that the things that you experience it will stay in your memory for a lifetime.
In short, simply being inspired is not enough, one must be an active participant to truly realise the true meaning of life.

Below are some of the pictures we have taken during and after the community services =)
I do hope that we can learn more in the coming community services.
